Description
An exciting colour combination of the increasingly popular 'Patty Pans'. These vigorous bushy plants with long, quite spiny stems, produce high numbers of scalloped 'patty pan' fruits if harvested regularly. Harvest at golf ball-size for soft-skinned, tender fruits to eat whole and raw. Larger 7cm (3in) fruits can be sliced for stir fries or steamed. The final fruits left to maturity can be stuffed/ baked. Mature fruits store well. Mixture includes: Custard Twinkle F1, Pesto Kemit F1 and Polo.

1 packet (6 squash seeds) (52507)

Sowing
Sow seeds April to May indoors 3-4 weeks before last spring frost. Sow seeds 1cm (1/2") deep, in pots of moist seed sowing mix. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of between 20-25°C (68-77°F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the seed sowing mix moist but not waterlogged;germination will usually take 5-7 days. Can also be sown direct outdoors once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed.

When at the 2 leaf stage, transplant seedlings on into 13cm (5in) pots for a few weeks before planting out, 60cm (24in) apart in a sunny sheltered spot on rich, well-drained soil.

More Info
Water squash regularly - do not allow the soil to dry out as this will impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Squash appreciate an application of a high potash fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Harvest squash in late summer and autumn, before the first frosts, when the skin has hardened and the fruits start to crack near to the stem. Harvest squash by cutting each fruit from the stem leaving several inches of the stem attached.
