Hardy evergreen, preferring a fertile, humus rich, well-drained, but moist soil in either part shade or full shade, although will tolerate a more sunny site if the soil is constantly moist. Avoid exposed sites, or afford shelter from biting cold winds. Sarcococca ‘Purple Stem’ is a suckering shrub, forming a dense, spreading bush, the young shoots are a dark purple, fading with age, with lance shaped, arching dark green leaves up to 9cm (3 ½ ‘’) in length. Pinkish-rose white, sweetly scented flowers form in the leaf axils from late winter through to spring, followed by tiny, spherical, dark blue-black, berries. Height: 1.5m (59"). Spread: 2m (78").

How to Grow
Grow sarcococca in any moist, well drained garden soil in a sheltered position, in semi-shade or shade. Christmas box will tolerate full sun provided that the soil remains moist. Alternatively grow sarcococca plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Feed and water regularly until young shrubs become established. Once established, Sarcococca will require little attention and often thrives on neglect. Pruning is not required other than to shape the plant if required, and to remove and unwanted suckers from the base of the plant.
