Water summer fruiting raspberries well for the first year until plants are fully established. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds. Each autumn, prune out the canes which have fruited over the summer, cutting them back to the base of the plant. Leave the remaining canes in place for fruiting in the following year. Aim to have 6 to 8 fruiting canes per plant. (If your plant does not fruit in the first year then there is no need to prune it at all until the following year, when you should remove only the canes which have produced fruit.) Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes in spring. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
Grow summer fruiting raspberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Plant this dwarf variety at a distance of 60cm (24") apart. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. When growing dwarf raspberries in containers, plant 1 raspberry plant per 10 litre pot, or 3 to a 40 litre pot.
The short stems of Raspberry 'Ruby Beauty'® need little support, except to prevent particularly heavy crops from bending the canes.
