Description
Pyracantha 'Red Column' is shrub that offers year round interest and is very easy to maintain. Planted as a hedge, its dense prickly branches make it impenetrable, increasing the security of your home and garden. In autumn and winter, Pyracantha it is full of red berries that look spectacular and also provide a great food source for garden birds during the harshest months of the year. Earlier in the year, this upright, evergreen Firethorn has masses of pretty white flowers, rich in nectar, that attract bees and other pollinating insects. It is ideal for wildlife and cottage gardens. As well as planted as hedging, it can also be trained up walls, or grown as a one off specimen in a mixed shrub border. Height: 3m (10').  Spread: 2.4m (8').

How to Grow
Grow Pyracantha plants as free-standing shrubs train as a hedge, or grow against a wall or fence. Plant Firethorn into any well drained, reliably moist soil in sun or semi shade. Choose a position with shelter from cold, drying winds.
More Info
Feed and water Pyracantha plants regularly until full established. Prune free-standing shrubs in early spring, removing damaged and poorly positioned shoots. For wall trained shrubs, tie in main shoots to form part of the permanent framework, and cut back unwanted shoots to the main stem. After flowering in summer, shorten the remaining stems to 3 leaves from the base, in order to expose the developing berries, and maximise the display. Remove any old fruit trusses in spring to make room for new growth. Caution: harmful if eaten.
