Description
It's easy to see why Itea virginica is also named Sweet Spire: from July to September, panicles of sweet-smelling flowers hang from its mound-forming foliage. These white blooms open slowly, beginning at the base and rising to the tip, creating a unique and ever-changing summer display. This shrub is far from a one-trick pony, for as soon as this show ends, another begins: the deciduous leaves turns spectacular shades of red and purple to mark the onset of winter. Even in its original, green state, the plant's foliage is an attractive prospect, for it spreads quickly and forms mounds when grown in moist, acid soil. Itea virginica is therefore an ideal choice for woodland gardens, or anywhere else that you think should be made a little sweeter. Height: 2m (6'5"). Spread: 1.5m (5').

How to Grow
Grow Itea in fertile, slightly acid soil. Sweet Spire enjoys moist, well drained conditions that don’t dry out in summer. Choose a position in part shade with shelter from cold, dry winds.
More Info
Feed and water Itea plants regularly until fully established. Prune Itea after flowering, cutting back to strong buds. Mature specimens can be further pruned to remove a quarter of the old stems from the base of the plant. Although perfectly hardy when mature, young Itea plants will appreciate a deep, dry mulch to protect the roots in winter.
