Description
This easy to grow, hardy annual is prized by florists for its frothy sprays of starry blooms, which add a light and airy feel to flower arrangements. Gypsophila elegans 'Improved Mixed' makes an equally useful 'filler' plant for the front of borders, accomodating the gaps between summer perennials and attracting pollinating insects. This delicate mix makes a useful choice for direct sowing in spring. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 30cm (12").

1 packet (500 seeds) (26078)

Sowing

Direct sow Gypsophila elegans seed outdoors where they are to grow from March to April in full sun, on any well-drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sprinkle seeds thinly over the soil surface and lightly rake the soil to ensure the seed is just covered. Alternatively, sow seeds thinly at a depth of 3mm in drills spaced 30cm (12") apart. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes around 21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart.

Alternatively, an autumn sowing can be made for overwintering to produce earlier flowers. They can also be autumn sown, and grown on in pots, in a cold greenhouse to produce spring flowering pot plants.

More Info
Water regularly until plants they become fully established. Pinch out the growing tips while plants are young to encourage bushiness. Gypsophila plants require very little maintenance. Cut back after flowering to promote more flowers. Gypsophila elegans will seed freely. Deadhead faded flowers if new seedlings are not required.
